Ships Log: S/V Graffiti, Fall Series 1997 Race 1

Pre Race: Friday 1900, T-17:00
The crew meets to discuss tactics and strategies for upcoming races. Meeting last in till 0100 when the crew retires due to lack of beer and inebriation.

Saturday 0830, T-03:30
In traditional manner the pre race breakfast is held at the Spar. The only thing to report here is Dave managed to get both eyes open around 0915 and Mike spilt his tomato juice.

Saturday 0945, T-02:15
The crew reassembles at Graffiti to do pre race cleaning and tuning. After some initial fumbling the rain gear and boots were sorted out and emergency rations, i.e. beer, were stowed. I did have some trouble trying to get my boots on correctly, about this time Joe was heard to say the wind sure is blowing.

Saturday 1015, T-01:45
Dave pointed the hose in the general vicinity of Graffiti while Mike leaned on the scrub brush. Then the standing rigging was set for 20 plus kts. and the day started looking up.

Saturday 1045, T-01:15
the bottom was scrubbed clean. This went off with out any major problems.

Saturday 1120, T-00:40
All lines were cast off, Mike then spilt his first beer of the day. At this point in time Joe noted the fuel can was almost empty, so it was decided to set the main and sail out to the course. This was done with some difficulty due to the fact the wind was blowing. After the main was set the outboard was raised.
The ride out was nice. There was some concern on deck due to Dave's need to sail by the lee, this was soon corrected with a beer.

Saturday 1140, T-00:20
Hat retainers were issued and a minor injury was incurred.

Saturday 1315, T-00:05
after some discussion the small jib was set, and Mike spilt his second beer of the day. Oh we also started the race.

Saturday, some time after noon
The first mark was passed and the spinnaker was set, Mike was seen to spill his third beer of the day. A comment on the wind velocity was made and Graffiti was thought to be planing.

Saturday, some time still after noon
Graffiti beat to windward and there was a general discussion about the weather and the size of the wind waves.

Saturday, afternoon
the main halyard pulled free of the mast cleat, and Mike spilt his fourth beer of the day. This problem was corrected rather quickly, the halyard not the beer.

Saturday still, although there is some doubt
Mark four is rounded again and the spinnaker is set for a second but brief time. About this time there was some excitement on deck as Graffiti was felt to have been healing about 85 degrees and a comment was made about lack of steerage. It was also discovered about now that the spinnaker pole had pulled free of the mast and it was not possible to reattach it. The spinnaker was recovered and packed. Mike was overheard to make a remark about the shape the mast had obtained during the excitement. No one actually witnesses it but Mike must have spilt a beer.

Its still day light out
Mark A is rounded again and the long beat windward is started. About a third of the way back the 155 Genoa is set. Twenty minutes later the small jib is reset. That was fun.

Close to the finish line, I think
Strider is spotted off to starboard and was noted to be closing fast. Strider was seen to be tacking off of Graffiti at about fifty feet. A conversation then ensued aboard Graffiti as to why Strider was still sailing.

Closer to the finish line
a second encounter with Strider ends the conversation about was Strider is still sailing and Joe teaches Dave how to do a 720.

The line is crossed the shot gun is heard and Mike spilt some more beer.
