In November 2008, Budd Inlet Star Fleet lost one of its founding members, Barbara Stuart. There were about 6 boats in the Star Fleet when Barbara purchased her boat. There are now about 30, one of the largest fleets in the United States.
From the beginning of the Budd Inlet Star Fleet, Barbara wanted to encourage women to race, and specifically on a Star. We lost her way too early but did not lose her dream. The first Barbara Stuart Regatta was held on July 18th, 2010. Six boats competed, all women and under some of the toughest conditions, very little wind and very hot weather.
True to the essence of Barbara, each boat had its moment. One boat that struggled in some of the other races, ended up taking first in the last race. Our newest racers took a second in that race and in addition had one of the most incredible port starts I have seen. Ginny Stern, racing with Deanna Frost, was co-owner of Stella Luna, the Star boat purchased with Barbara, made a good showing too.
Three boats fought it out for the first three places. Vicki Sheldon and Linda Rose tied for second with 11 points. Myra Downing and Marti Walker broke the tie with their two firsts. But Annie Stockton and Sandi Whitmore beat both of them by one point and took home the gold, a first in the first Barbara Stuart regatta.
Congratulations to all the racers. No complaining, just solid concentration and focus for about three and a hours in about three and half knots of wind, and that is stretching it. A good day by all.
A special thanks to John Thompson for having the fortitude and commitment to keep this dream alive, and the memory of our dear friend Barbara.
