At our General meeting in October, Stiy Wilson will focus on his experience sailing to four of the five oceanic gyres aboard a 72-foot Challenge Yacht. Stiv and crew sailed to the so-called garbage patches sampling the ocean surface every 50 nautical miles.  He experienced hurricane force winds in the North Atlantic between Bermuda and The Azores, endless fog off the Grand Banks, storms in the South Atlantic leaving him hove-to for 36 hours, as well as the abundance and natural beauty that connects us all to the ocean. The expeditions comprised 13 different passages across the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.

Stiv Wilson is an award winning activist, Emmy-nominated filmmaker, and educator working at the nexus of marine conservation, plastic pollution, petrochemical production and human rights. Stiv co-authored the first ever global estimate of the abundance of plastics in all of the major five oceans in the peer reviewed journal, PLOS ONE. After co-authoring and publishing several other scientific papers on the abundance of microplastics in the marine and fresh water systems, Stiv went on to pass state level policy as well as the first plastics focused national policy, The Plastic Free Waters Act, that was signed into law by President Obama in 2015. He produced his first feature length documentary, The Story of Plastic, which has earned several awards on the film festival circuit as well as an Emmy nomination. He resides in Olympia, WA with his partner and twin daughters Ocean and Forest, and mutt Lucy. Here’s a link to Stiv’s documentary on Discovery Channel’s YouTube site: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCNanJNJ8JA

We also will have cruising and racing updates and a “Cool Tool” presentation and a safety minute (or two).

Given the state of the COVID-19 pandemic, we will be returning to Zoom for our General meetings until further notice.  SSSS members will be sent an email to register for the meeting at least ten days before the event.

The Zoom will begin at 7:00 pm, but the “Zoom Doors” will be open at 6:45 pm.

Please join us.
