The South Sound Sailing Society, Olympia Yacht Club, Olympia Community Sailing, and the Puget Sound Estuarium are hosting a forum for candidates who are running for the Port of Olympia Commission on the evening of Thursday, October 5. The forum will be via Zoom at 7 PM.
As a result of the recent expansion of the commission from three to five members and Commissioner Joe Downing not running for re-election, there are three open positions on the commission. All six candidates have indicated that they are planning to participate, including: Position 1, Bill McGregor and Jasmine Vasavada; Position 4, Rose Chiu Gundersen and Maggie Sanders; and Position 5, Sarah Tonge and Troy Kirby. Information on each candidate is available on the Thurston County Auditor’s Election webpage .
The Port of Olympia plays a critical role in providing sailboat moorage and maintenance facilities in Olympia, providing access to Budd Inlet, improving water quality, and creating jobs. It is embarking on a major project to dredge contaminated sediments that are a legacy of Olympia’s waterfront industrial past and has the commission has the authority to make our waterfront more accessible and attractive.
The Zoom link to register for the forum will be sent to SSSS member several days before the event.
We hope you will join us.
