Presenter-

For nearly 250 years, galleons made the long voyage from Spain’s colony in Manila to Acapulco, Mexico, carrying luxury goods from Asia to Spanish colonists in the New World.  One of those galleons, off course and possibly driven by a storm, wrecked near the Nehalem Spit in Oregon in 1693.  The wreck was first reported by fur traders in Astoria, and artifacts from the wreck continue to be found today, including “beeswax” and porcelain.  Scott Williams will discuss the research project to identify the vessel and to locate the wreck.

Scott is a professional archaeologist with over thirty-five years of experience conducting archaeological research throughout the Pacific Northwest, the islands of the Pacific, and Australia.  He is currently the Cultural Resources Program Manager for the Washington State Department of Transportation, where he oversees the agency’s archaeology and history program.  In addition to his full-time job with the WSDOT, he is Vice President of the Maritime Archaeological Society and serves as the Principal Investigator for the Beeswax Wreck Project, a non-profit, multi-disciplinary project investigating the Spanish Manila galleon wrecked on the north Oregon coast in the 17th Century.  For more information, search for “Beeswax wreck” on the internet.

In addition to Scott’s presentation, you will have an opportunity to chat with small groups of other members, get information on upcoming races and cruises, and hear about other SSSS activities.

The Zoom meeting will begin at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, January 12, with the Zoom Doors open at 6:50 pm.  You can register for the meeting at:  https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZYrdumrqDsvG9JwoNdUKwgkAnBz2WddawfD.
